{"id":1143,"date":"2026-09-10T13:56:02","date_gmt":"2026-09-10T13:56:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nof.dnac.org\/2026\/?page_id=1143"},"modified":"2026-09-10T13:59:38","modified_gmt":"2026-09-10T13:59:38","slug":"invited-talks-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/nof.dnac.org\/2026\/invited-talks-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Invited Talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #097fd9;\"><strong>ERN Invited talks<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Invited talk #1:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Title: <span style=\"color: #097fd9;\">Next-Generation Mobile Network Experiments: The Potential of Coordinating Federated Learning and RAN Transport<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Abstract: <\/strong>Federated learning is emerging as a key enabler for adapting large language models using private and geographically distributed data generated at the mobile network edge. Federated fine-tuning, however, produces recurring, asynchronous, and deadline-sensitive communication workloads that can affect both the radio access network (RAN) and the underlying transport infrastructure. Wireless variability, mobility, and device heterogeneity cause user-equipment updates to become available at different times even when they belong to the same learning round and share a common destination and deadline. This paper outlines an experimental framework for studying the impact of federated-learning traffic on the RAN, with particular attention to traffic generation, update synchronization, in-network aggregation, and transport-resource utilization. It also discusses how learning-aware coordination between a gNB and a transport Time-Division Multiplexing Passive Optical Network (TDM-PON) can use the extended Cooperative Transport Interface (eCTI) to request upstream capacity when an aggregate burst becomes ready. Such coordination can allocate bandwidth close to the burst arrival time, thereby reducing persistent overreservation and the grant-waiting component of latency. The resulting considerations support the design of programmable RAN and transport architectures for distributed AI workloads and identify the measurements required to validate these concepts on real protocol stacks and testbeds.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row listeCommitee\"><div class=\"col-lg-12\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nof.dnac.org\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/rof.-Luca-Valcarenghi.jpeg\" class=\"img-rounded imageCommitee\" alt=\"Prof. Luca Valcarenghi - NoF 2026\"><p><b>Prof. Luca Valcarenghi<\/b><br>(Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Pisa \u00b7 Italy)<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p><strong>Bio: Dr. Luca Valcarenghi <\/strong>received the Ph.D. degrees from UTD in 1999 and 2001. He has been a Full Professor with the Scuola Superiore Sant\u2019Anna, Pisa, Italy, since 2024. He published more than 300 papers in international journals and conference proceedings. He served as a PI or local PI for several national and international projects. His main research interests include optical networks design, analysis, and optimization, communication networks reliability, energy efficiency in communications networks, optical access networks, zero touch network and service management, 5G technologies and beyond, and networking for the edge-cloud continuum. He received the Fulbright Research Scholar Fellowship in 2009 and the JSPS \u201cInvitation Fellowship Program for Research in Japan (Long Term)\u201d in 2013.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Invited talk #2:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Title: <span style=\"color: #097fd9;\">Sustainability-by-design in 6G Technology<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Abstract: <\/strong>Mobile Generation Networks, originating with 1G nearly five decades ago, have historically evolved around pure performance metrics aimed at expanding bandwidth, connectivity, and data rates while lowering latency and cost-per-byte. However, this evolution paradigm has exposed clear limitations since 4G and exacerbated throughout 5G due to diminishing returns on investment, mounting social acceptance challenges, and escalating resource consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Drawing on lessons learned from early 5G and 6G initiatives and aligning with the sustainability principles promoted by the European Commission and the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU), the SUSTAIN-6G project (<a href=\"https:\/\/sustain-6g.eu\/\">https:\/\/sustain-6g.eu\/<\/a> &#8211; SNS JU and Horizon GA No 101191936) moves beyond conventional performance metrics to pioneer an end-to-end &#8220;sustainability-by-design&#8221; framework. This approach encompasses both sustainable network design (Sustainable 6G) and network-enabled external sustainability (6G for Sustainability).<\/p>\n<p>The project\u2019s framework operationalises values and principles into verifiable requirements by addressing the end-to-end life cycle, from the effects of building the technology (e.g., raw material extraction and manufacturing footprint) to the systemic outcomes of its usage (e.g., social inclusion and equitable access). Structured across three interrelated pillars (environmental, social, and economic), SUSTAIN-6G employs Key Value Indicators (KVIs) alongside traditional performance indicators (KPIs) to assess technology enablers. This systematic methodology is validated across four vertical domains: Mobile Network Operators (MNO), Smart Agriculture, Smart Energy, and e-Health, ultimately establishing an iterative closed-loop validation pipeline to holistically optimise the 6G ecosystem.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row listeCommitee\"><div class=\"col-lg-12\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nof.dnac.org\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/briguglio.jpeg\" class=\"img-rounded imageCommitee\" alt=\"Luigi Briguglio - NoF 2026\"><p><b>Luigi Briguglio<\/b><br>(CyberSocial Lab. Srl. Impresa Sociale \u2013 partner of the SUSTAIN-6G project. Italy)<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p><strong>Bio:Luigi Briguglio<\/strong>holds an MSc in Electronic Engineering, with a specialisation in Telecommunications, from the University of Padua and is a PMI-certified Project Manager. He has worked in both electronics and software engineering for decades across industrial and research environments, gaining extensive experience with SCADA, embedded systems, mechatronics, power systems, protocols, and software architecture.\u00a0 He has long-standing experience in European research projects and is the author and co-author of scientific papers and book chapters. Since 2019, he has served as a Senior Researcher and ICT Consultant at CyberEthics Lab., applying Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) principles and embedding them into the technology development process. In 2024, he co-founded CyberSocial Lab., where he serves as a board member. He also contributes his expertise to technical standardization committees, including UNINFO, CEN\/CENELEC, and ISO\/IEC.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Invited talk #3:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Title: <span style=\"color: #097fd9;\">Secrets of Semantic Communications: From Theory to Experiments and Standardization\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Abstract: <\/strong>This keynote provides an overview of the key challenges and opportunities of Semantic Communications, covering recent advances from theoretical foundations to experimental demonstrations, real-world implementations, and emerging standardization activities. Particular attention will be given to the lessons learned from practical deployments and to the launch of the new ETSI ISG on Semantic Communications, which aims to establish the first industry-wide framework for semantic and goal-oriented communications.<\/p>\n<p>The keynote will also present key results and insights from the European flagship projects 6G-GOALS, 6G-DISAC, and 6GARROW, as well as from the newly established Orange\u2013CEA Joint Laboratory on Semantic Communications and Native AI Networking. Together, these initiatives are contributing to the development of the scientific foundations, technological building blocks, and standardization roadmap that will shape the next generation of intelligent, AI-native communication systems.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row listeCommitee\"><div class=\"col-lg-12\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nof.dnac.org\/2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Emilio-Calvanese-Strinati-554x500.jpeg\" class=\"img-rounded imageCommitee\" alt=\"Emilio Calvanese Strinati - NoF 2026\"><p><b>Emilio Calvanese Strinati<\/b><br>(CEA-Leti, France)<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p><strong>Bio: Dr. Emilio Calvanese <\/strong>Strinati obtained his Engineering Master degree in 2001 from the University of Rome \u2018La Sapienza\u2019 and his Ph.D in Engineering Science in 2005 from Paris Telecom. He then started working at Motorola Labs in Paris in 2002. Then in 2006 he joint CEA LETI as a research engineer. From 2007, he becomes a PhD supervisor. From 2010 to 2012, he has been the co-chair of the wireless working group in GreenTouch Initiative, which deals with design of future energy efficient communication networks. From 2011 to 2016 he was the Smart Devices &amp;amp; Telecommunications strategic programs Director, then, until January 2020 he was the Smart Devices &amp;amp; Telecommunications Scientific and Innovation Director. Since February 2020 he is the Nanotechnologies and Wireless for 6G (New-6G) Program Director focusing on future 6G technologies. He is also the coordinator of the EU funded projects 6G-GOALS (focused on Semantic and Goal Oriented communications) and 6G-DISAC (focused on Integrated Semantic Communications and Sensing). He has published around 250 papers in journals, international conferences, and books chapters, and he has given more than 300 international invited talks, keynotes and tutorials. He is the main inventor of more than 100+ patents. His current research interests are on Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces, ICAS, Semantic communications, Goal-oriented communications AI-native technologies in the contest of 6G.
